Bengals and their Character

playingThe well socialised Bengal cat is an alert and very intelligent cat. Bengals are very loving and always ready to have some fun. These cats are obviously far removed from the wild form of the ALC (Asian Leopard Cat). Bengals love their humans and are able to express their wishes with their cooing and chattering. Bengals play with everything they can find. They are highly curious and find everything interesting, no matter what it is.

Furthermore they love water. They like to splash around in it and will fish play things out of buckets. There are even some Bengals who like to go swimming. A paddling pool in summer is a joy for a Bengal cat.
Many Bengals will retrieve toys and take real pleasure in doing so. A Bengal wants to be kept occupied; otherwise they get distressed and start to get bored. They are full of spirit and like to fool around. When doing so they are very adept in their movements and appear very elegant. Their surroundings need to be constantly recreated and kept interesting. Bring a large sheet of paper or a box home or perhaps in autumn a box of leaves or something else. You can really give full rein to your imagination and I can assure you that whatever you bring your Bengis home they will be delighted with it.
Bengal’s gait is reminiscent of that of a leopard, fluid soundless movements are a few impressions. Their gestures are also still very much like those of their wild cat fore-fathers. When they are playing one is able to observe how for example they make their tale all bushy, lay their ears back close to their head, and miau for pacification etc.
Bengals should not be kept as solitary cats and definitely require another cat as a playmate. They really enjoy playing with their humans but we are unable to substitute as a cat partner. Bengals are demanding in their upkeep and can not be compared in any way to any other breed of cat. They are ‘small dogs’ who follow their owner’s every move. Whoever is at work all day should not consider bringing a Bengal into their home. The Bengal would become discontented and miserable. If a Bengal receives too little attention then it will quickly find itself another occupation, not always one which pleases the owner.
Unfortunately Bengals are often regarded as prestige objects. All too quickly a cat is bought but the needs of these beautiful creatures are not taken seriously, or are completely disregarded. This then brings the breed into disrepute. Unfortunately they are then quickly condemned as being wild and unclean. Yet the truth is that Bengals are enchanting and noble creatures. One just has to understand and love them. Take time to consider whether you want to share your life with the somewhat demanding leopard in the living-room. If the points I have raised here give you some cause for concern then you would be better to choose another breed of cat.
If you like a quiet cat, then a Bengal is not right for you and you should choose another breed. If, however, you want fun and action then you will be absolutely delighted with a lounge leopard.
As a summary it would be fair to say that Bengals are very loving, intelligent, demanding, playful, funny and very lively cats, but are definitely not the ideal breed for ‘everyone’.
